McGovernite is a rare arsenite-arsenate silicate named after Franklin collector J.J. McGovern (?-1915) (Palache and Bauer, 1927). The mineral forms red-brown platy crystals with a high luster. Unlike the similar looking mineral kraisslite, mcgovernite forms radiating aggregates, which reach 5 mm on this specimen. A rich example.
This specimen was part of the personal collection of Ralph Merrill, proprietor of the prolific mail order business Minerals Unlimited, obtained in 1953. Merrill's collection card and label also ship with the specimen.
