Friedelite

Friedelite is a rare manganese silicate found in a few skarns worldwide. Bertrand (1876) first described the mineral from the French Pyrénées, naming it in honor of French mineralogist Charles Friedel (1832-1899).

Friedelite forms a tan crust of microcrystals to 1.5 mm across. The matrix consists of calcite and franklinite with minor willemite. This specimen has two saw cuts on its backside. From the collection of E.R. Laskowski (1949-2020), a mining engineer who retired to Tucson, Arizona.
