Nontronite

Nontronite is a hydrous sodium iron aluminosilicate, Berthier (1827) named the species for its occurrence in the Nontron district of France. Nontronite is a widespread clay mineral on Earth, now also known from Mars (Ehlmann et al., 2009).

This is hand sample of yellow-green, friable, dull nontronite. Representative of the species. Is this what a Martian hand sample might look like? From the collection of E.R. Laskowski (1949-2020), a mining engineer who retired to Tucson, Arizona. Personally collected by Laskowski in 1990.
