Tritomite-(Y)

Tritomite-(Y) is a yttrium borosilicate. Originally named spencite by Frondel (1961), restudy by Jaffe & Molinski (1962) demonstrated the similarity of spencite and tritomite. In his seminal paper defining rare earth mineral nomenclature, Levinson (1966) separated tritomite into two species, original tritomite-(Ce) from Norway and this mineral tritomite-(Y).

Tritomite-(Y) forms a resinous black mass, 1.1 cm across, in massive magnetite. This is the type locality for tritomite-(Y). Part of the collection of E.R. Laskowski (1949-2020), a mining engineer who retired to Tucson, Arizona. Formerly in the A.L. Kidwell and Gunnar Bjareby collections.
