Zircon

Zircon is zirconium silicate, knwon since ancient times. The mineral appears in the Bible under the name hyacinth. Individual zircon crystals are the oldest known crystals formed on Earth, up to 4.4 billion years old. The mineral name likely derives from a Persian zar and gun for sun and color, through the arabic zarqun.

This specimen is an amphibole and feldspar matrix, hosting numerous red zircon crystals to 1.2 cm across, and 1.2 cm long. The zircon crystals are textbook tetragonal, each with four prism and eight dipyramidal faces. From the collection of E.R. Laskowski (1949-2020), a mining engineer who retired to Tucson, Arizona. Nice piece.
