Arsenic

Arsenic is a naturally occurring semi-metallic element. Arsenic has a hexagonal (rhombohedral) crystal structure. The word arsenic comes from the Greek arsenikon, itself likely derived from an ancient Persian word for orpiment. Typically massive, arsenic in this unique Japanese lava flow forms crystallized spheres.

This is a sphere of very crude, rounded rhombohedral crystals of arsenic to 4 mm. From the collection of E.R. Laskowski (1949-2020), a mining engineer who retired to Tucson, Arizona.
