Ferrotapiolite is an iron tantalum oxide, dimorphous with ferrotantalite. Originally named tapiolite by Nordenskiöld (1863), the mineral named changed to with the discovery of a manganese analog (Lahti et al., 1983). Subsequently the International Mineralogical Association changed the mineral name to tapiolite-(Fe) (Burke, 2008). Ferrotapiolite is tetragonal, with a crystal structure derived form that of rutile. This specimen hosts a single 9 × 8 mm crystal in pegmatite matrix. The matrix consists of muscovite, quartz, and albite.
From the collection of E.R. Laskowski (1949-2020), a mining engineer who retired to Tucson, Arizona. Laskowski acquired this specimen from Christian Rewitzer in 2009; Laskowski and Rewitzer labels accompany the specimen.
