Spinel is a magnesium aluminum oxide, typically in octahedral crystals. The name spinel comes from the French spinelle for thorn (or point) alluding to the six points of an octahedron. Spinel here forms a flattened octahedron, 13 × 10 × 3 mm in marble matrix. This particular crystal does not show obvious twinning, which is usually the case for such flattened crystals.
From the collection of E.R. Laskowski (1949-2020). Laskowski acquired this specimen from in 2006; a label from Laskowski accompanies the specimen.
