- 4.4 by 3.2 by 1.7 cm – Miniature specimen (fits into a 5 cm cube)
Pinakiolite is magnesium manganese borate mineral. The mineral name (Flink, 1890) denotes thin tablet in Greek; this example shows black clevages to 1.5 cm in a matrix of dolomite and manganese bearing phlogopite. These are very large crystal grains of this rarity.
This specimen was part of the personal collection of Ralph Merrill, proprietor of the prolific mail order business Minerals Unlimited. He obtained the piece in 1948. Merrill's collection card and label also ship with the specimen.
