Uvarovite - Sold

Uvarovite is a calcium chromium garnet species named in honor of Count Sergei Semenovich Uvarov (1786-1855), Russian nobleman (Hess, 1932). This is a rare example from California. Most such examples were collected in the early boom days, and processed for their chromium content. Uvarovite here forms scattered dodecahedral crystals to 3 mm on a matrix of magnesiochromite. This specimen was part of the personal collection of Ralph Merrill, proprietor of the prolific mail order business Minerals Unlimited, obtained in 1952.
