Franklinite - Sold

Franklinite is a nominally a zinc iron oxide, but normally contains considerable manganese. The mineral was first analyzed by Berthier (1819) and later given its current name by Silliman (1820). Franklinite is a member of the spinel group, and as such, typically forms octahedral crystals. This crystal is certainly above average for development of form and completeness. There is some chipping on the crystal edges, and one face is quite rough, but this is a 95% complete single crystal. Choice. This specimen was part of the personal collection of Ralph Merrill, proprietor of the prolific mail order business Minerals Unlimited.
