Phenakite is a beryllium silicate related to willemite. The mineral was named for its ability to deceive when compared to massive quartz (Nordenskjöld, 1834). This is a rhombohedral crystal of phenakite from the treacherous Mount Anetro aquamarine diggings. This is a complete rhombohedral crystal, 1.5 cm on edge, with a bit of attached matrix and some lesser attached crystals. A choice thumbnail specimen. This specimen was part of the personal collection of Ralph Merrill, proprietor of the prolific mail order business Minerals Unlimited.
