Zektzerite

- Washington Pass

- 5.3 by 3.7 by 3.4 cm – Miniature specimen (fits into a 5 cm cube)
Dunn et al. (1977) described zektzerite as a new lithium sodium zirconium silicate from Washington Pass. Originally thought to be pink beryl (aka morganite), collector Jack Zektzer wanted mineralogical confirmation. The mineralogists found the mineral to be new, and remarkable for forming crystals to 3.5 cm! Since the 1970s few pockets at the locality have contained crystals, and specimens are difficult to obtain. This matrix specimen remained in the collection of a regional specialist, Mark Mauthner, for several years. Zektzerite crystals on this specimen reach 1.0 cm across, and have a slight pink color.
