Kolwezite is a copper cobalt carbonate, related to malachite and rosasite. Deliens & Piret (1980) named the mineral for Kolwezi, a town nearby the type locality. Perchiazza & Merlino (2006) showed the cobalt and copper occupy separate sites in the crystal structure, and thusly revising the species formula.
Velvety kolwezite mostly covers a matrix of pink crystallized calcite. From the collection of E.R. Laskowski (1949-2020), a mining engineer who retired to Tucson, Arizona.
