Ludwigite

Ludwigite is a magnesium iron borate. Tschermak (1874) named the mienral after professor Ernst Ludwig (1842-1915), chemist at the University of Vienna, who first analyzed the original material.

Ludwigite here forms prismatic crystal sections to 2.2 cm, all lacking terminations. Partial etching of the enclosing calcite has revealed the ludwigite. The ludwigite has altered partly to a tan mineral; this seems unrelated to the acid cleaning process. From the Charles Trantham (1936-2020) estate.
