Ulexite clamshell

Ulexite is a complex hydrated sodium calcium borate (Ghose et al., 1978). In his 1850 System of Mineralogy, professor James Dana named the species after German chemist George Ludwig Ulex (1811-1883). Ulexite typically has a fibrous form, and many specimens are very delicate.

This is an unusual ulexite, consisting of tightly intergrown radiating fibers. Such specimens are locally known as clamshells.A peculiar species representation of ulexite which is otherwise as fragile as dandelions. Interesting and distinctive. This specimen was part of the Charles Trantham (1936-2020) estate.
