Plattnerite is a polymorph of lead dioxide. Plattnerite is one of six species (recognized to date) with Pb4+. The vast majority of secondary lead minerals contain Pb2+. While first reported in 1837, the name plattnerite comes from Haidinger's 1845 Handbuch der bestimmenden Mineralogie. The mineral name honors Carl Friedrich Plattner (1800-1858), professor of Metallurgy and Assaying at the Freiburg Mining Academy.
Plattnerite here forms scattered crystals to 2 mm on limonite matrix. These are large crystals for the locality, and the species in general. Some of the crystals are twinned in classic "knee cap" style.
