Stephanite is a silver antimony sulfosalt. While known since the time of Agricola, Austrian mineralogist Wilhelm Haidinger (1795-1871) renamed this species after Archduke Victor Stephan in his 1845 Handbuch der bestimmenden Mineralogie. Archduke Victor Stephan (1817-1867) served as Mining Director for Austria.
This is a grouping of small stephanite crystals to 0.9 mm, grown in in parallel to form a complex aggregate, 2.3 × 1.3 cm. The matrix is a quartz shell, as though grown on a bubble. In excellent condition. Quite choice and delicate.
