Home > American Minerals III – May 26 > MS1571 Petersite-(Y)

Petersite-(Y) is a hydrated copper yttrium phosphate and a member of the mixite group. Peacor & Dunn (1982) named the mineral in honor of the Peters brothers, Joseph and Thomas. Joe Peters worked at the American Museum of Natural History while Thomas Peters worked at the Paterson Museum (New Jersey). Petersite-(Y) here forms a radiating group of green hexagonal needles. The matrix consists of green (presumably copper bearing) opal coating hornfels. This is a mounted micromount in a 3/4" box. This is an excellent specimen of this species.
