Tschernichite is a hydrated calcium aluminosilicate mineral, and a member of the zeolite group (Coombs et al., 1997). Smith et al. (1991) named the mineral in honor of Rudy Tschernich, a zeolite scientist and mineral collector, while Boggs et al. (1993) wrote a complete mineralogical description. Mr. Tschernich literally wrote the book on zeolites: Zeolite Minerals of the World, which is available for download from mindat.org.

Tschernichite has tetragonal symmetry, typically forming steep dipyramidal crystals, like this example. This specimen has two groups of colorless crystals to 0.5 mm in a single vesicle in basalt.
