Eskolaite is a simple chromium oxide (Kouvo & Vuorelainen, 1958). The mineral name honors Professor Pentti Eelis Eskola (1883-1964), of the University of Helsinki. Eskolaite has the same crystal structure as both corundum and hematite; its crystal form mimics those of hematite and corundum.
Eskolaite here forms a lustrous 5 mm crystal. The crystal is well encased in a matrix of massive chalcopyrite, pentlandite, and quartz matrix. Large crystal! The crystal is only partly exposed, showing a prominent pinacoidal face and two smaller rhombohedral faces.
