Dolomite after Calcite

- 6.3 by 5.4 by 3.4 cm – Small cabinet specimen (under 10 cm)
Calcite and dolomite are both carbonate minerals. At Guanajuato, late stage fluids replace calcite with dolomite. The mechanism is complex, involcivng crsytallographic alignment which is visible in the specimen. Pearce et al. (2013) provide many insights. A 4.3 cm scalenohedral calcite has been replaced by pearly white dolomite. The matrix is very pale amethyst partly covered in further dolomite. Such specimens were common on the mineral market in the 1960s and 1970s but seem to be much less available these days. Sparkly.
