Home > Copper Minerals – January 21 > MS1494 Aikinite

Aikinite is a copper lead bismuth sulfide. Chapman (1843) named the species after Arthur Aikin (1773-1854), an English chemist and mineralogist and a founding member of Royal Society of Chemistry. The crystal structure of aikinite crystal is fundamental to the numerous mineral species in the aikinite-bismuthinite homeotypic series (Moëlo et al., 2008).

This aikinite specimen is from the type locality. Aikinite here forms bent and striated crystals to 2.0 cm, variously iridescent purple to gold, or oxidized black. There is at least one spot of native gold on this specimen. This piece was part of the Allen Parker collection; Parker acquired the piece from Mineralogical Research Company. Carlton Davis (1920-2006) and Mineralogical Research labels accompany the specimen.
