This is an attractive combination of two well known minerals, malachite and calcite. Malachite is a green copper carbonate, named after the Greek word malache, mallows.
This specimens dates to the 1960s or earlier, when many fine specimens were coming out of Mexico. Malachite forms dark green hard spheres to 7 mm on semitransparent calcite crystals to 3 cm. Attractive! This specimen was part of the Josie Scripps (1910-1992) mineral collection. Her typed collection label, albeit generic without her name, accompanies the specimen.
