Home > Copper Minerals – January 21 > MS1491 Tyrolite

Tyrolite is a hydrous copper calcium arsenate carbonate. The mineral name denotes its type occurrence within Tyrol, Austria. Haidinger (1845) assigned the mineral its currently accepted name. Krivovichev et al. (2006) present an interesting history of the species, including a century of debate about its ideal formula.

Tyrolite here forms pearly blue-green plates on quartz matrix. The tyrolite plates reach 4 mm across on this specimen. A rather large matrix piece fo this material. While this specimen hails from the region of the type locality, it is not possible to guarantee that it comes from the same specific workings. Carries Excalibur Mineral and Charles Lewis labels.
