Almeidaite is a complex oxide of lead, zinc, manganese, and titanium (Menezes et al. 2015). The type (and currently only known) locality for almeidaite lies in an iron mining region. Collector and dealer Luis Menezes noticed that this mineral looked different from hematite. Preliminary chemical data did not match other known minerals. Almeidaite is remarkable in its crystal size for a recent new species (IMA2013-020).
This is a section of a single crystal, 2.2 cm across, with minor chipping on its edges. The mineral typically shows an altered surface, much like shrinkage cracking on mud, which visually distinguishes these from the well known hematite crystals found nearby.
