Hussak & Prior (1898) named the mineral after Joachim Candido de Costa Sena (1852-1919), professor of mineralogy, School of Mines, Ouro Preto, Brazil.

Senaite forms loose crystals found in diamond bearing sands. This is a rather large albeit crude crystal. 12 mm in greatest dimension.
