Home > Lead Minerals – December 10 > MS1452 Altaite

Altaite is simple lead telluride with the rock salt crystal structure. Haidinger (1845) named the species after the Altai Mountains of Kazakhstan, site of the type locality.

In Bulletin 11 of the New Mexico Geological Survey, Dunham (1935) stated under the listing of the Hilltop mine that "specimens of altaite were sold to mineral collectors". This example consists of iridescent altaite in matrix.
