Cerussite
- Touissit
- Oriental Region
- Morocco
- 4.6 by 4.6 by 1.8 cm – Miniature specimen (fits into a 5 cm cube)
Cerussite is simple lead carbonate. The mineral has orthorhombic symmetry, and often twins to form pseudohexagonal crystals. The name cerussite derives from the Latin cerussa, an ancient name for the compound. Cerussite is rather widespread globally, but fine specimens are rather limited in occurrence. One of the premier cerussite specimen localities is the mines at Touisitt, Morocco.
Cerussite here forms a fine twinned crystal, with a sidecar. The crystal is pale tan in color and varies from semitransparent to transparent. There is one chip on the edge near the re-entrant of the twin. While visible in the photos, this does not detract from the aesthetics of this specimen. Nice!
