Renierite is a copper iron germanium sulfide. The mineral is structurally related to sphalerite, but more complex (Bernstein, 1986; Bernstein et al., 1989). The mineral name honors Armand Renier (1876-1951), former director of the Corps des Mines (the geological survey of Belgium).
Renierite looks much like bornite, with which it is commonly associated. Renierite has a purple iridescence. This piece also has minor chalcopyrite in association.
