Louderback & Blasdale (1909) named joaquinite after the Joaquin Ridge, a feature near the benitoite mine. Its true chemistry eluded researchers until Semenov et al. (1967) demonstrated the presence of rare earth elements.
This specimen of glaucophane schist hosts a joaquinite-(Ce) crystals 2 mm across. That is large for the species! These specimens are becoming rare stockpiles of specimens are being depleted.
