Pyrite is an iron disulfide, known since ancient times. The mineral derives from the Greek pyr for fire, since it sparks on impact.
Pyrite has diploidal symmetry, which means it lacks 4-fold or tetrahedral symmetry. As such it can twin by rotation on [100], as seen in this example. Such twinning produces a cross, and pieces like this are called "iron cross" twins. Complete all around, with micro-chipping on edges present. Not common in pyrite.
