Galena, Linarite, Anglesite

Galena is an ancient mineral name, derived from Latin. It is simple lead sulfide, subject to oxidation in air. Once released from the galena crystal, lead does not travel far, redepositing on top of the galena as the sulfates anglesite and linarite.

This is an attractive mineral specimen with a 2.2 by 2.0 cube of galena covered in bright drusy anglesite and blue linarite. This is an excellent heuristic for teaching mineral paragenesis, where minerals of similar chemistry occur together.
