Florencite is a cerium aluminum phosphate, part of the alunite supergroup (Bayliss et al., 2010). Hussak & Prior (1900) named the species after William Florence (1864–1942), a Brazilian mineralogist who recognized the cerium in the mineral.
This is fine example from the magnesite deposits at Brumado. The matrix is in fact a single rhombohedron of magnesite, 2.1 cm on edge. The isolated tan florencite-(Ce) crystal measures 6.5 by 4 mm.
