Magnetite - Sold

Magnetite is an iron oxide mineral, a member of the spinel group. It has cubic symmetry, but is probably most often forms octahedral crystals. Haidinger (1845) gave the mineral its modern name, a shortening of the term magnetic iron ore.

Usually magnetite forms interlocking aggregates of crystals, but this is a special piece, where the magnetite formed on a prominence of skarn. It has an unusual dodecahedral habit. Attached garnet skarn covers approximately 15% of this otherwise complete crystal.
