Grossular - Sold

Grossular is an calcium aluminum silicate, specifically a member of the garnet group (Grew et al. 2013). Grossular takes its name from the botanical name of the gooseberry, Ribes grossularium.

Grossular gems from Mali first appeared on the gem market in 1994 (Johnson & Boehm, 1995). Their study indicates that chromium (Cr3+) is responsible for the green coloration. This example is a vivid green trapezohedron, crystallized all around. The bottom shows rehealing of crystal form and a bit of a brown spot. A good gem crystal of chromium bearing grossular.
