Spinel - Sold

Spinel is a magnesium aluminum oxide known since ancient times. The modern name may come from the Latin spinella, for little thorn, an allusion to its spine-shaped octahedral form. Pure spinel is colorless, but a wide range of impurities are known to impart a complete color gamut for the species. Gem red spinel from Burma owes its color to chromium, just as in the ruby variety of corundum.

This is a complete octahedral gem crystal of spinel. The crystal has some inclusions, which likely led to its preservation as a mineral specimen. 4.90 cts.
