McGovernite - Sold

McGovernite is a rare zinc manganese arsenite arsenate silicate. The mineral name honors Franklin collector James McGovern (1861-1915) (Palache and Bauer, 1927). The mineral forms red-brown platy crystals with a high luster. Unlike the similar looking mineral kraisslite, mcgovernite forms radiating aggregates.

This is a rich mcgovernite specimen, with foliated crystals covering a nearly 7 by 3 cm area. The matrix is lean willemite and franklinite ore in calcite. Good example.
