Dioptase - Sold

Dioptase is a copper silicate mineral. Its mineral name has an unusual -ase ending, which refers to its the ability to see through the crystal, transparency, in Greek (Hauy, 1797, 1798). The mineral is well known for its attractive emerlad green coloration. At Tsumeb, dioptase forms some of the largest and most lustrous crystals known. One feature of Tsumeb specimens is the contrasting matrix, here microcrystalline dolomite, which contrasts well with the green dioptase. The dioptase crystals reach 6 mm and are well separated, even perched up, on matrix. Nice piece.
