Rheniite

Rheniite is a rhenium sulfide, one of only two known species with essential rhenium. The mineral forms where hot gases exhale from an active volcano. Znamensky et al. (2005) described the mineral after some years of colloboration. Apparently, two separate groups characterized the species, but reported certain conflicting results. Fortunately, there was a resolution, and rheniite received IMA approval. Rheniite forms tiny plates, perhaps to 0.5 mm here, in concentric groupings on the friable altered matrix. There are also needles of cannizzarite present. This is a rich specimen, wherein all of the metallic material appears to be platy rheniite.
