Tunellite - Sold

Tunellite is a rare hydrated strontium borate. Unlike many borate species, tunellite is stable in both humid and arid environments. Erd et al. (1961) named tunellite in honor of George Tunell (1900-1996), professor of mineralogy at the University of California at Los Angeles. Tunellite has monoclinic symmetry and perfect cleavage on {001}; the faces of which display pearly luster. This is a large tunellite crystal! Unlike many specimens on the market, this crystal represents an earlier find, dated 1945, and shows more sharpness and simplicity of form not seen in more recent finds. No evidence of cleavage; in excellent condition. A California mineral classic.

This specimen was part of the personal collection of Ralph Merrill, proprietor of the prolific mail order business Minerals Unlimited. Merrill's collection card and label ship with the specimen.
