Home > Western U.S. – August 22 > MS1239 Woodhouseite

Woodhouseite is a member of the alunite group, specifically a calcium aluminum phosphate sulfate. Lemmon (1937) named the mineral in honor of Charles Douglas Woodhouse (1888-1975), professor at University of California at Santa Barbara, mineralogist and mineral collector. This specimen was collected in 2015 by Chris Lehmann, of Benton, California. Woodhouseite here completely encrusts a quartz breccia fragment, with crystals reaching 4 mm. The crystals are striated rhombohedra, some showing prominent pinacoidal modifications. Rich sample.
