Louderback & Blasdale (1909) named joaquinite after the Joaquin Ridge, a feature near the Benitoite Gem mine. Its true chemistry eluded researchers until Semenov et al. (1967) demonstrated the presence of rare earth elements.

This specimen of glaucophane schist hosts 17 joaquinite-(Ce) crystals to 1.5 mm, and 2 benitoite crystals to 2 mm. These specimens are becoming rare on the California market as the mine is closed and stockpiles of specimens are essentially exhausted.
