Home > African Minerals – April 25 > MS1201 Chervetite

Chervetite is a rare mineral, specifically lead pyrovanadate. Bariand et al. (1963) named the mineral after Jean Chervet (1904-1962), French mineralogist. This piece comes from the type locality, the Mounana uranium mine, a naturally occurring nuclear reactor!

Chervetite here forms flat-lying bladed crystals to 4 mm on a matrix of sandstone. There are also fine-grained brown mounanaite and yellow-orange aggregates of francevillite present. Please note that sandstone matrix is sawn on the backside and also one edge. A very rich and rather large specimen of chervetite!
