Home > African Minerals – April 25 > MS1200 Sanidine

Sanidine is a high temperature feldspar found in volcanic rocks. These yellow gem feldspar crystals have been known from Itongray since the nineteenth century. Recent efforts (2011-2012) have yielded a few nice examples, and much of the material is shipped directly to China for cutting. The color comes from a minor iron content. This is a very sharp and quite complete example. These crystals occur in a volcanic ash flow, so they are rarely (if ever) complete. This example is approximately 95% complete, which is considerably better than average. Good transparency and excellent crystal form. There is micro-chipping on the crystal edges.
