Almeidaite

Almeidaite is a complex lead zinc manganese titanium oxide mineral (Menezes et al. 2015). The type (and currently only known) locality for almeidaite resides in a significant iron mining region. Collector/dealer Luis Menezes noticed that this material looked distinct from hematite. His initial chemical analysis lead to the recognition of this new species. Almeidaite is remarkable in its crystal size for a recent new species (IMA2013-020). This is a large single crystal, 3.3 cm across, with minor chipping on its edges. The mineral typically shows an altered surface, much like shrinkage cracking on mud, which visually separates these crystals from similar hematite crystals nearby.
