Home > Lead Minerals – December 31 > MS1145 Minium

Minium is an oxide of lead, known especially for its red color. The name minium comes from an old Latin name for cinnabar, which often was admixed with this red lead oxide compound. In 1806, James Smithson published an account of the natural mineral equivalent of the well known pigment.

This specimen consists of altered galena, turning into white powdery anglesite, and now covered on two surfaces with red powdery minium. There is also some minor gypsum providing scattered specular reflections.
