Bobdownsite is hydrated phosphate fluoride of calcium and magnesium. The mineral is a member of the whitlockite group, and originally thought to be whitlockite. Careful analysis showed a fluorine content, which elevated this material to new species status. Bobdownsite comes a remote area reached by helicopter and nearly all specimens come from a series of excavations by Tod Tyson. The mineral name honors Bob Downs, professor of mineralogy at the University of Arizona (Tait et al. 2011). This is the first mineral with a P - F bond! This specimen has a large hexagonal crystal, 1.8 cm across, on matrix. Nice isolation for the species.
