Home > Type Localities I – June 9 > MS1096 Tschernichite

Tschernichite is a hydrated calcium aluminosilicate mineral, part of the zeolite group. Smith et al. (1991) named the mineral in honor of Rudy Tschernich, a zeolite scientist and mineral collector, while Boggs et al. (1993) wrote a complete mineralogical description. Mr. Tschernich literally wrote the book on zeolites: Zeolite Minerals of the World, which is available for download here. Tschernichite has tetragonal symmetry, and characteristically forms steep dipyramidal crystals, like this example. This specimen has two 2 mm crystals in a vesicle in basalt. This specimen came from Rudy Tschernich, and comes with his signed label.
