Loughlinite is a hydrated sodium magnesium silicate mineral. Loughlinite forms white fibers normal to the bedding of its shale matrix. Associated here is pearly searlesite, which forms a barrier between the fibrous layers and the shale matrix. Fahey et al. (1960) named this species after Dr. Gerald F. Loughlin (1880-1946), geologist at the United States Geological Survey (U.S.G.S.). Rare stuff!
